Économiste, longtemps professeur à l'Université de Vancouver, Walter Block enseigne aujourd'hui sur la côte est des États-Unis à l'université Loyola de la Nouvelle-Orléans. Il fut le premier trésorier du Center for Libertarian Studies dont le président était John Hagel III et le directeur, Walter E. Grinder.

Dans son ouvrage Défendre les indéfendables (1975), il prend une position pour le moins étonnante. Une fois bien distinguée, en guise d'avant-propos, la différence fondamentale entre une activité moralement condamnable et le droit inaliénable juridiquement reconnu à tel ou telle de l'exercer, Walter Block entend démontrer, en bon économiste utilitariste, que ces activités que notre société redécouvre sont non seulement acceptables mais bénéfiques pour l'ensemble de la communauté (elles répondent toutes, en effet, à une demande des citoyens).

Tel est l'objet de ce livre sulfureux, véritable OVNI dans dans le ciel de l'idéologie consensuelle dominante, à droite comme à gauche.

Walter Block n'entend pas ici faire œuvre de théoricien : défendre les indéfendables est un brûlot de vie pratique. On n'y trouvera que des cas concrets et quotidiens (une cinquantaine) regroupés en grandes parties thématiques (l'argent, le sexe, les médias, etc.).

Des prostituées aux proxénètes, des dealers aux drogués, des pollueurs aux maîtres chanteurs, tous les parias de la bonne morale sociale trouvent chez Walter Block un défenseur paradoxal, à la pensée infaillible fondée sur les démonstrations les plus rationnelles, faisant de lui un cas unique, sans aucun préalable ni équivalent contemporain. Block est le premier qui a le courage de proposer une défense libertarienne de certaines activités paisibles et pourtant considérées inconvenantes par les bien-pensants.

Dans les années 1990, Walter Block évolue cependant vers un certain conservatisme et renie une partie de ses écrits :

En essayant de la manière la plus frappante possible de montrer que la violence initiale était un mal - ce qu’elle est en effet - j’ai malheureusement perdu de vue qu’elle n’est pas le seul mal. Bien que je connaissais, bien entendu, la distinction entre ce qui est légal et ce qui est moral, je croyais que les seules actes immoraux étaient les actes impliquant une agression. Depuis plusieurs années, cependant, j’ai finalement acquis la conviction qu’il existe d’autres actes immoraux. L’erreur que j’ai commise dans mes précédents écrits, tel qu’il me l’apparaît aujourd’hui, est que je ne suis pas seulement un libéral libertarien, mais aussi un conservateur culturel. Je ne m’intéresse pas seulement à ce que la loi doit être, je vis aussi dans un domaine moral, culturel et éthique. J’étais auparavant tellement abasourdi par l’éclat de la vision libertarienne (je le suis toujours) que j’oubliais le fait que je suis plus qu’un simple libertarien. En tant que libertarien et conservateur culturel, je ne vois pas d’incompatibilité entre des croyances qui appartiennent à deux univers très différents. (Libertarianism and Libertinism, 1998)

Walter Block, en tant qu'économiste, a réalisé des analyses sérieuses sur le Droit de propriété et sur l'organisation industrielle avec la concurrence, le monopole et les lois antitrusts en point de mire. Libéral et scientifique, il fait partie du bureau éditorial du Journal of Libertarian Studies.
