Deirdre Nansen McCloskey (Ann Arbor, Michigan, le 11 septembre 1942) est depuis 1995 une femme économiste favorable au libre marché. Avant elle était un homme et se prénommait Donald. Elle se définit comme postmoderne, libertarienne, féministe et aristotélicienne. Ses centres principaux de recherche incluent les origines du monde moderne, l'utilisation abusive des statistiques significatives en économie et d'autres sciences, et l'étude du capitalisme, entre autres.

Biographie

McCloskey est né fils aîné de l'universitaire Robert G. McCloskey, professeur à l'Université de Harvard et de la poétesse Helen Stueland.

Mariée pendant trente ans et mère de deux enfants, elle a décidé de devenir une femme en 1995, à l'âge de 53 ans. Elle a relaté son expérience dans un ouvrage : Crossing: A Memoir (University of Chicago Press, 1999) salué comme un livre important de l'année par le New York Times. Elle y décrit l'émergence croissante de son identité féminine, sa transition chirurgicale et sociale comme femme et son divorce, malgré l'opposition de son épouse. Le livre décrit sa nouvelle vie, et la poursuite de sa carrière en tant qu'économiste académique.

McCloskey plaide en faveur des droits des personnes et des organisations de la communauté LGBT. Elle a joué un rôle clé lors de la controverse à propos de la théorie de Blanchard, de Bailey, et de Lawrence et dans le débat sur le livre de J. Michael Bailey, The Man Would Be Queen, sur les raisons pour lesquelles les femmes transsexuelles désirent cette transformation d'homme en femme.

McCloskey s'est décrite comme une femme « littéraire, quantitative, postmoderne, pro-marché, progressiste, épiscopalienne, bostonienne du Midwest qui était autrefois un homme ». Carrière universitaire

McCloskey a obtenu son diplôme de premier cycle et d'études supérieures en économie à l'Université de Harvard. Sa thèse, supervisée par Alexander Gerschenkron, a remporté en 1973 le Prix David A. Wells.

En 1968, McCloskey est devenu professeur adjoint d'économie à l' Université de Chicago, où elle est restée pendant 12 ans, devenant professeur agrégée en économie en 1975 et professeur associée en histoire en 1979. Son travail à Chicago est marqué par sa contribution à la révolution cliométrique dans l'histoire économique. Elle a formé plusieurs générations d'économistes majeurs de l'École de Chicago. Ses cours ont été la source d'inspiration de son livre The Applied Theory of Price.

En 1979, à la suggestion de la Wayne Booth in English de Chicago, elle s'est tournée vers l'étude de la rhétorique économique. Plus tard, à l' Université de l'Iowa , elle a publié The Rhetoric of Economics (1985) et co-fondée avec John S. Nelson, Allan Megill et d'autres un Institut et Programme d'études supérieures, le Project on Rhetoric of Inquiry. McCloskey a publié 16 livres et près de 400 articles dans les nombreux domaines de ses recherches.

Professeur émérite d'économie, d'histoire, d'anglais et de communication à l'Université de l'Illinois à Chicago (UIC), elle y est également professeur adjointe de Philosophie and Classics et a été, pendant cinq ans, professeur invitée de philosophie à l'Université Erasmus de Rotterdam. Depuis octobre 2007, elle a reçu six doctorats honoris causa. En 2013, elle a reçu le prix commémoratif Julian L. Simon du Competitive Enterprise Institute pour son travail examinant les facteurs dans l'histoire ayant mené à l'avancement dans la réalisation humaine et la prospérité.

Les apports de Deirdre McCloskey

Ses principales contributions ont porté sur l' histoire économique de la Grande-Bretagne (commerce du XIXe siècle, histoire moderne, agriculture médiévale), la quantification de l'enquête historique ( cliometrics ), la rhétorique économique, la rhétorique des sciences humaines, la méthodologie économique, la vertu L'éthique, l'économie féministe, l' économie hétérodoxe , le rôle des mathématiques dans l'analyse économique et l'utilisation (parfois mauvaise) des statistiques significatives en économie et, dans sa trilogie sur «L'ère bourgeoise», les origines de la révolution industrielle.

Son livre The Bourgeois Virtues: Ethics for an Age of Commerce a été le premier de la trilogie, publié en 2006. Le deuxième, Bourgeois Dignity: Why Economics Can't Explain the Modern World a été publié en 2010, et le troisième, Bourgeois Equality: How Ideas, Not Capital or Institutions, Enriched the World est paru en 2016.
