Richard M. Ebeling est né en 1950 à New York City. Il a obtenu ses premiers diplômes en éconmie (B.A) à l'Université d'Etat de Californie à Sacramento. Il poursuivit ensuite ses études (M.A) à l'Université Rutgers. Il a été maître de conférence à l'Université Nationale d'Irlande à Cork (1981–1983), Professeur assistant en économie à l'Université de Dallas (1984–1988), et Professeur d'économie à Hillsdale College (1988–2003). Depuis 2003, il dirige le FEE (Fondation for Economic Education). Ses écrits ont été traduit dans plusieurs pays : Brésil, Grande-Bretagne, Pologne, Lituanie et Russie. En 1991, le professeur Richard Ebeling fit 6 voyages dans l'ancienne Union Soviétique, en tant que consultant du gouvernement de Lituanie et auprès des membres du parlement russe à Moscou sur les sujets de réforme du marché et de la privatisation de l'économie socialiste. Il était présent à Vilnius, en Lithuanie, en janvier 1991 et fut témoin de l'intervention militiare russe lorsque 13 lituaniens furent tués. Il était à Moscou en août 1991, lors du coup d'Etat manqué et il fut derrière les barricades avec les défenseurs de la liberté au parlement Russe. Depuis, la retraite d'Israel Kirzner, Richard Ebeling est le doyen des professeurs de l'école autrichienne en activité.
