Coût de transaction
Un coût de transaction est un coût lié à un échange économique, plus précisément une transaction sur le marché. Ce coût n'existe pas dans le cadre de la concurrence pure et parfaite. Il peut être direct (commission de Bourse) ou indirect (coût de prospection, temps et effort passés à la négociation et à la vérification de la transaction, etc.).
Le terme a été inventé par Ronald Coase, dans son article The Nature of the Firm (1937). Le concept permet d'expliquer pourquoi toutes les transactions ne sont pas des transactions de marché, d'où l'existence d'entreprises ou firmes, qui peuvent limiter efficacement ces coûts en imposant la coopération entre employés.
L'introduction de cette analyse a conduit à la naissance d'une branche chevauchant les domaines de l'économie et du droit : la Théorie des Coûts de Transaction (TCT). Parmi les auteurs de la TCT, on retrouve Ronald Coase, Oliver Williamson, Harold Demsetz ou Yoram Barzel.
