Knut Wicksell (Stockholm, 20 décembre 1851 – Stocksund, 3 mai 1926), l'un des fondateurs de la macroéconomie moderne, était un économiste suédois, célèbre pour sa théorie monétaire. Ses travaux sur les taux d'intérêt nominaux et réels, la productivité marginale du capital, et les déterminants du niveau des prix sont tout aussi importants. Il a fortement influencé l'école autrichienne, en particulier Friedrich Hayek et Ludwig von Mises.

Knut Wicksell a écrit un essai en 1896 au tout début de sa carrière. L'économiste suédois pose son principe que les seules taxes et dépenses publiques justifiables sont celles que les contribuables approuvent à l'unanimité. De cette façon, les promoteurs de programmes doivent concevoir des impôts qui prennent réellement de l'argent aux bénéficiaires de ces programmes et non aux autres. Un tel système, explique-il, serait non seulement efficace, mais aussi moralement sain. Sinon cela serait une injustice si quelqu'un est contraint de contribuer aux coûts d'une activité qui ne sert pas ses intérêts ou qui peut même être diamétralement opposés aux siens.
