Richard M. Ebeling est né en 1950 à New York City. Il a obtenu ses premiers diplômes en éconmie (B.A) à l'Université d'Etat de Californie à Sacramento. Il poursuivit ensuite ses études (M.A) à l'Université Rutgers. Il a été maître de conférence à l'Université Nationale d'Irlande à Cork (1981–1983), Professeur assistant en économie à l'Université de Dallas (1984–1988), et Professeur d'économie à Hillsdale College (1988–2003). Depuis 2003, il dirige le FEE (Fondation for Economic Education). Ses écrits ont été traduit dans plusieurs pays : Brésil, Grande-Bretagne, Pologne, Lituanie et Russie. En 1991, le professeur Richard Ebeling fit 6 voyages dans l'ancienne Union Soviétique, en tant que consultant du gouvernement de Lituanie et auprès des membres du parlement russe à Moscou sur les sujets de réforme du marché et de la privatisation de l'économie socialiste. Il était présent à Vilnius, en Lithuanie, en janvier 1991 et fut témoin de l'intervention militiare russe lorsque 13 lituaniens furent tués. Il était à Moscou en août 1991, lors du coup d'Etat manqué et il fut derrière les barricades avec les défenseurs de la liberté au parlement Russe.
