Paul A. Lewis est professeur d'économie au King's College à Londres. il est un adepte du réalisme critique.

Paul Lewis est maître de conférences en économie et en politiques publiques. Il a étudié à Peterhouse et à Christ Church. Avant de venir au King's College de Londres, il était chargé de cours à la Faculté des sciences économiques et politiques, de l'université de Cambridge, et chercheur aux établissements d'enseignement supérieur : Emmanuel et Selwyn. Il est actuellement chercheur invité au Centre Mercatus à la George Mason University, aux Etats-Unis.

Dans son article paru en 2016 (b), Paul Lewis identifie les sources sur lesquelles Friedrich Hayek s'est appuyé pour développer sa compréhension de la notion d'émergence. En effet, la notion d'émergence joue un rôle important dans les analyses de Friedrich Hayek sur l'ordre sensoriel de l'être humain et sur le marché. Chez le prix Nobel d'économie en 1974, les capacités clés de l'esprit humain permettent à chaque individu de percevoir le monde qui les entoure et de former des plans sur la façon d'agir. Ce sont des propriétés émergentes du réseau structuré de neurones qui se trouvent dans le cerveau humain. De manière analogue, l'analyse du marché de l'économiste autrichien décrit les pouvoirs de coordination du mécanisme des prix comme une propriété émergente du système social qui se forme lorsque les inter-actions des personnes sont régies par un ensemble de normes qui inclut à la fois les règles formelles de la propriété et de la responsabilité individuelle civile et pénale à savoir le droit des contrats, ainsi que les normes informelles d'honnêteté et de tenue des promesses.

Cependant, alors que plusieurs chercheurs ont identifié l'importance de la notion d'émergence dans la pensée de Friedrich Hayek, Paul Lewis note qu'aucun auteur n'a encore exploré systématiquement et en détail les sources à partir desquelles Friedrich Hayek a acquis sa connaissance du concept. Son article a remédié à cette omission en examinant l'histoire de l'utilisation du concept d'émergence et en identifiant les sources par lesquelles les notions d'émergence et de « propriétés émergentes » sont entrées dans la pensée de Friedrich Hayek. Paul Lewis en conclut qu'il y a trois principales sources d'influence : les idées du psychologue allemand Wilhelm Wundt, le travail des membres de la Gestalt School of Psychology et les écrits des biologistes organicistes Joseph Woodger et Ludwig von Bertalanffy.
