Richard McKenzie est Professeur de d'économie d'entreprise au Paul Merage School of Business de l'Université de Californie, à Irvine. Il fut diplômé (B.S.) du Collège de Pfeiffer en Caroline du Nord en 1964, et de l'Université du Maryland (Ma en 1967) suivi d'un doctorat au Virginia Tech en 1972. Il a reçu un doctorat honorifique en lettres en 2001. Ses recherches s'étendent sur un grand nombre de domaines, mais il se concentre, avant tout, sur les questions de politique économique dans le cadre de l'école du Public Choice. Sa recherche actuelle porte sur les bases neurologiques du comportement rationnel.
Il a écrit plus de vingt-cinq livres dont les plus récents sont "Pourquoi les Popcorns coûtent-ils si chers au cinéma, et d'autres énigmes de prix" (Copernicus / Springer Mai 2008), "En défense du monopole: comment la puissance sur le marché favorise la production créative" (University of Michigan Press, Février 2008), et "Microéconomie pour les étudiants de MBA: Le mode de pensée des économistes au service des managers" (Cambridge University Press, 2006). Il a également écrit sur l'économie numérique: Comment les technologies de l'information ont transformé la pensée de l'entreprise (2003); "Le procès du Trust : Comment l'affaire Microsoft recadre les règles de la concurrence" (2001); "La gestion par le biais des incitations: Comment développer une Organisation plus collaborative, plus productive et plus rentable" (1998). Son livre, co-écrit avec Gordon Tullock, "le nouveau monde de l'économie" fut rééddité quatre fois en cinq langues étrangères.
