John van Sickle est né en 1892 et il est décédé en 1975. C'était un économiste, spécialiste des sujets fiscaux et membre de la Société du Mont-Pèlerin.

Entre les deux guerres mondiales, John von Sickle se trouve en Europe, tout d'abord en France, en poste de Directeur associé du Bureau Rockefeller à Paris, puis en Autriche. Il était Lieutenant dans l'armée américaine et aide de camp d'un colonel affecté à Vienne. Comme il avait beaucoup de temps libre, il décida d'étudier les sujets fiscaux, pour avancer sur sa thèse lorsqu'il serait de retour aux États-Unis à l'Université d'Harvard. C'est ainsi qu'il rencontre Ludwig von Mises et qu'il participe à ses séminaires. Après sa thèse, il enseigne à l'université Vanderbilt à Nashville, dans le Tenessee, puis au Wabash College de 1946 à 1961, en compagnie d'un autre économiste, favorable au libre marché, Benjamin A. Rogge. Tous les deux, ils invitent Milton Friedman à partir de juin 1956, à une série de séminaires au Wabash College grâce au financement de la Fondation Volker. Ceci devint la base du futur succès de Milton Friedman, sur la défense de la liberté : Capitalism and Freedom. Il permet aussi à Pierre Goodrich, enseignant au Wabash College, d'être membre de la Société du Mont-Pèlerin.
