Eamonn Butler est né le 3 janvier 1952 à Shrewsbury (Grande Bretagne). Eamonn Butler est directeur de l’Adam Smith Institute, l’un des principaux groupes de réflexion politiques au monde. Il a obtenu ses diplômes en économie et en psychologie, un doctorat en philosophie. Dans les années 1970, il a travaillé à Washington pour la Chambre des représentants des États-Unis et a enseigné la philosophie au Hillsdale College, dans le Michigan, avant de retourner au Royaume-Uni pour aider à fonder le "Adam Smith Institute". Il est un ancien lauréat de la Freedom Medal décernée par la Freedom’s Foundation of Valley Forge et du UK National Free Enterprise Award. Eamonn Butler est actuellement secrétaire de la société du Mont Pèlerin. Il s'est fait remarquer également par sa très grande puissance d'intelligence logique en réussissant les tests Mensa.

Eamonn Butler est l'auteur de nombreux livres, y compris des introductions d'économistes et des penseurs pionniers du libéralisme comme Adam Smith, Milton Friedman, Friedrich Hayek, Ludwig von Mises et Ayn Rand. Il a également publié des ouvrages sur le libéralisme classique, les choix publics, la Magna Carta, l'École autrichienne d'économie et de grands penseurs libéraux. Son ouvrage sur les "Fondations d'une société libre" a remporté le prix Fisher en 2014.
