Le révérend [[Edmund A. Opitz]] (11 février [[1914]] - 13 février [[2006]]) était un pasteur congrégationaliste qui, pendant des décennies, fut le champion de la cause d'une société libre et de la nécessité d'ancrer la société dans une morale transcendante. Il fut l'une des rares voix dans les années [[1950]] jusque dans les années [[1990]], à présenter une compréhension de l'intégration entre la liberté économique et la sensibilité religieuse. Au début des années [[1950]], il est le directeur d'une organisation spirituelle, "Spiritual Mobilization", qui publiait un magazine, Faith and Liberty, dont [[Murray Rothbard]] et [[Henry Hazlitt]] furent des contributeurs.

Il fut membre, pendant de nombreuses années (de [[1955]] à [[1992]]), du personnel de la [[Foundation for Economic Education|Fondation d'éducation économique]] à Irvington-on-Hudson, dans l’État de New York et rédacteur en chef de la revue "The Freeman". [[Leonard Read]]  l'a embauché en [[1955]], année du lancement du Magazine "The Freeman" par la FEE. Durant son activité il lança deux organisations sous l'inspiration d'[[Albert Jay Nock]], "The Remnant" ([[1957]]) et "The Nockian Society" ([[1963]]). Edmund Opitz s'est opposé à l’État messianique, c'est-à-dire à l'idée de présenter l'État comme un sauveur.

Une partie importante de son travail a consisté à exposer les raisons et l'importance d'une intégration entre la [[religion]] et le [[capitalisme]], en les présentant comme des alliés et non pas comme des ennemis. Il a fait valoir que le sens moral peut et doit être fait dans l'univers physique, qui fut créé par un Dieu bienveillant, et qui a situé la famille humaine dans les exigences de la [[rareté]] et donc soumise à la [[Loi de l'offre et de la demande]]. Cependant, il serait erroné de classer cet auteur parmi les économistes "fondamentalistes" ou théocrate. Edmund Opitz a toujours pris soin de noter que le christianisme en tant que tel, n'offre pas de modèle économique, pas plus que l'économie en tant que système n'est un modèle moral. C'est la raison pour laquelle ils ont besoin l'un de l'autre.

Un individu est libre lorsqu'il est autodéterminé et qu'il se contrôle. Un être humain est libre de ses actions lorsqu'il accepte que ses limites pour agir ne sont pas plus grandes que nécessaires pour répondre à l'exigence que tout autre individu aurait pour s'assurer une liberté similaire.

Le révérend Edmund A. Opitz (11 février 1914 - 13 février 2006) était un pasteur congrégationaliste qui a été pendant des décennies le champion de la cause d'une société libre et de la nécessité de l'ancrer dans une morale transcendante. Il a été l'une des rares voix dans les années 1950 jusque dans les années 1990 à présenter une compréhension de l'intégration entre la liberté économique et la sensibilité religieuse. Au début des années 1950, il est le directeur de l'organisation spirituelle Spiritual Mobilization, qui publiait Faith and Liberty, un magazine dont Murray Rothbard et Henry Hazlitt furent des contributeurs.

Une participation active au sein de la FEE

Pendant de nombreuses années, (de 1955 à 1992), il a été membre du personnel de la Fondation d'éducation économique à Irvington-on-Hudson, dans l’État de New York et rédacteur en chef de la revue The Freeman. Leonard Read l'a embauché en 1955, année du lancement du magazine The Freeman par la FEE. Durant son activité il lança deux organisations sous l'inspiration d'Albert Jay Nock, The Remnant (1957) et The Nockian Society (1963). Edmund Opitz s'est opposé à l’État messianique, c'est-à-dire à l'idée de présenter l'État comme un sauveur.

Une partie importante de son travail a consisté à exposer les raisons et l'importance d'une intégration entre la religion et le capitalisme, en les présentant comme des alliés et non pas comme des ennemis. Il a fait valoir que le sens moral peut et doit être fait dans l'univers physique, qui fut créé par un Dieu bienveillant, et qui a situé la famille parmi les exigences de la rareté et donc soumise à la Loi de l'offre et de la demande. Cependant, il serait erroné de classer cet auteur parmi les économistes fondamentalistes ou théocrate. Edmund Opitz a toujours pris soin de noter que le christianisme n'offre pas de modèle économique, pas plus que l'économie en tant que système n'est un modèle moral. C'est la raison pour laquelle ils ont besoin l'un de l'autre.

En 1991, la Fondation lui a remis un prix pour la qualité d'écriture de Les racines bibliques de la liberté américaine, un essai paru dans The Freeman en juillet 1991. Il présente la thèse selon laquelle les nations occidentales furent fondées sur des principes bibliques de justice, de liberté et d'une éthique du travail. Dans son esprit, la liberté est le corollaire de l'équité. Dans Définir la liberté, un article écrit dans la revue The Freeman en septembre 1962, il indique que la liberté ne signifie pas l'absence de restrictions ou de contraintes. Un individu est libre lorsqu'il est autodéterminé et qu'il se contrôle. Un être humain est libre de ses actions lorsqu'il accepte que ses limites pour agir ne sont pas plus grandes que nécessaires pour répondre à l'exigence que tout autre individu aurait pour s'assurer une liberté similaire.
