John Harold Clapham (né le 13 septembre 1873 à Manchester - décédé le 29 mars 1946), était un historien économique de l'université de Cambridge. Il a fait ses études à l'école Leys, une école méthodiste de Cambridge. Il s'est inscrit au King's College, à Cambridge en 1892, en obtenant des honneurs de première classe en 1894 et en recevant son diplôme (B.A), en 1895. Son essai sur les causes de la guerre de 1792 a remporté un prix et l'a mené à son élection en tant que Fellow du King's College en 1898. Il a obtenu son Master (M.A.) en 1899. J.H. Clapham est devenu le premier professeur d'histoire économique de Cambridge en 1928.

A Cambridge, John H. Clapham a étudié l'histoire avec Lord Acton et William Cunningham et l'économie avec Alfred Marshall. À l'origine, il avait l'intention de se spécialiser dans la Révolution française, mais il passa de l'histoire politique à l'histoire économique. En évitant l'historicisme nationaliste de Cunningham, John Clapham a adopté la saveur du libre-échange et du laissez-faire d'Alfred Marshall.

À défaut de trouver un poste d'historien, John Clapham a pris une chaire en économie au Yorkshire College, à Leeds (maintenant dénommé Université de Leeds) en 1902. Il a commencé à faire des recherches sur les Industries de la laine et de la laine peignée et il a contribué aux chapitres économiques de Lord Acton sur l'Histoire moderne à Cambridge. En 1908, John Clapham est retourné à Cambridge en tant que doyen du King's College, devenant professeur d'histoire en 1913. Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, John Clapham a siégé au "Board of Trade". Il a été président de la section F du BAAS en 1920 et il a dirigé le comité sur l'étalon-or, en produisant son célèbre rapport sur la politique monétaire en recommandant un retour immédiat à l'étalon-or.

Le travail le plus célèbre de John Clapham est probablement son histoire économique magistrale de la Grande Bretagne moderne, où il a entrepris de réviser l'image pessimiste populaire de la révolution industrielle du XIXe siècle (à l'origine présentée par les historiens romantiques et les socialistes) et réitérée par des contemporains tels que J L Hammond, R H Tawney et GDH Cole). Aidé par des données statistiques, John Clapham nota que la révolution industrielle était plus lente et locale et non pas un événement national rapide. Il précisa que l'Etat britannique n'était pas ignorant et négligent, mais qu'il était tout à fait conscient de cette évolution. John Clapham reprocha à l'Etat d'avoir entrepris des mesures pour atténuer l'impact de la croissance. Contrairement à la rhétorique anti-industrielle romantique, John Clapham affirma que les salaires et les niveaux de vie de la majorité de la classe ouvrière anglaise (sauf pour les tisserands à main) avaient considérablement augmenté au cours de la période. L'interprétation de John Clapham déboucha sur un débat parmi les historiens économiques qui se poursuivit dans les années 1960.
