Vernon L. Smith (né le 1er janvier 1927, est professeur de droit et d'économie à l'Economic Science Institute de la Chapman University, après avoir enseigné durant sept ans à la George Mason University. Il y est membre associé de l'Interdisciplinary Center for Economic Science et Fellow du Mercatus Center.
Il a reçu le Prix Nobel d'économie en 2002 pour avoir introduit la recherche expérimentale en laboratoire à l'analyse économique. Il se dit libertarien et reconnait l'influence qu'a pu avoir sur lui la lecture de L'Action humaine de Ludwig von Mises, ainsi que l'importance à ses yeux de Friedrich Hayek.
Il est marié avec Candace Allen.
