Niclas Berggren est professeur associé d'économie à l'université de Stockholm, en Suède. Il est également Vice President, de l'institut libéral suédois, Ratio.

Parmi ses thèmes de recherche, il apprécie d'étudier les effets des institutions économiques et politiques (en utilisant comme mesure, l'indice de liberté économique, en recherchant les formes possibles de Constitutions) ou les institutions sociales (capital social, confiance, religion). Il se base sur la philosophie économique contractualiste de James Buchanan, pour en tirer des principaux généraux sur le subjectivisme éthique, le positivisme juridique et économique qui sont à la base des institutions telles que les droits de propriété. De façon originale, il s'est intéressé au rôle de la beauté dans la politique.
