Dans un article écrit en [[1979]], « The War for Southern Independence: A Radical Libertarian Perspective » (La guerre pour l'indépendance du sud : une perspective libertarienne radicale), Joseph Stromberg effectue une analogie entre [[Abraham Lincoln]] et ses défenseurs historiques avec le parti national libéral de l'Allemagne impériale ([[1867]]-[[1918]]). Comme les membres de ce parti, les successeurs de Lincoln ont subordonné toute la gamme des libertés individuelles à la création et à la préservation d'un État-nation spécifique. Malheureusement, ces pertes de liberté, prétendument avancées par les détenteurs du pouvoir politique, comme étant de courte durée, ne sont jamais revenues, pleines et entières, face au tout pouvoir d'un État élargi.
