Sous l'influence de l'école autrichienne dont Friedrich Hayek, Jack Wiseman a participé au développement du subjectivisme méthodologique avec ses compagnons de route : James McGill Buchanan, Ronald Coase, Ronald Edwards, Ludwig Lachmann, George Shackle et George F. Thirlby. Il a enseigné à la London School of Economics jusqu'en 1964 avant de partir pour l'université de York. Là, il établit une programme de finances publiques, avec Alan Peacock. Il travailla de façon rapprochée avec Stephen Littlechild et James Buchanan jusqu'à sa retraite en 1987.
