Hillel Steiner est un philosophe canadien, professeur de philosophie à l'université de Manchester.
Présentation
Il est diplômé en philosophie des universités de Toronto, Carleton et Manchester, où il obtint son Ph.D.
Il est membre de la British Academy depuis 1999.
Idées
Il écrit principalement sur les questions de liberté et de justice sociale. Son ouvrage le plus célèbre, An Essay on Rights, a reçu le prix du meilleur ouvrage de la Political Studies Association en 1994. Il y propose une théorie de la justice distributive que l'on qualifie généralement de libertarienne de gauche.
Pour Hillel Steiner, les ressources extérieures appartiennent initialement à tous et la société doit à chacun une part égale de ces ressources extérieures. C'est donc une approche qui tente de concilier la liberté de l'individu et l'égalitarisme dans la disposition que chacun peut avoir des ressources. Chez les libertariens de gauche, Steiner est un de ceux qui étend le plus ces « ressources extérieures » qu'il faut partager de façon égalitaire. On peut légitimement s'interroger sur la pertinence de l'étiquette libertarien dans ce cas.
Il a également travaillé sur la notion de juste prix.
