Isaac Ehrlich est un économiste de l'école de Chicago de la troisième génération qui, en compagnie de Gary Becker a fait avancer l'analyse économique des institutions particulièrement celle des structures sociales (Retraite, famille, Assurance), des sujets de démographie (fertilité, espérance de vie, mortalité) et de sociologie économique (corruption, crime, punition, salaire minimum, justice). Son coeur de recherche inclut également le rôle de l'information et le capital humain dans le marché financier international. Il porte un regard critique sur la littérature financière classique, qui ne reconnaît pas le rôle de l'information dans le marché (en poursuivant les travaux de Friedrich Hayek et George Stigler). Il est docteur Honoris Causa de l'Université d'Orléans en 2002.

Il est rédacteur en chef de la revue Journal of Human Capital, et membre du comité éditorial de l'Asian Journal of Law and Economics.

En 2008, il a été nommé conseiller du Council of Economic Advisors du gouverneur de New York David A. Patterson[1]

En 2011, il a été nommé pour siéger au Conseil consultatif scientifique du Centre Wittgensetin pour la démographie et le capital humain global, à Vienne (Autriche). Il est également chercheur associé à l'Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) de Bonn (Allemagne).

Il fait partie des signataires d'un appel de cent économistes américains qui s'opposent à la politique de relance financée par de nouveaux impôts et au protectionnisme défendus par Barack Obama. Ils soulignent à l'inverse les effets positifs du libre-échange pour tous et montrent que ce genre de mesure est de nature à entretenir une récession durable. Parmi les autres signataires figurent Robert Barro, Gary Becker, James Buchanan, Robert Mundell, William Niskanen, Michael Porter ou encore Anna Schwartz[2].
