Michael Joseph Oakeshott (11 Décembre 1901 – 19 Décembre 1990) était un philosophe anglais qui portait un intérêt particulier dans la pensée politique, l'histoire, l'éducation, la religion et l'esthétique. Il fait partie des intellectuels conservateurs les plus influents du XX^e siècle.

Il a exercé une influence notable dans la montée du thatchérisme au Royaume-Uni.

Il développe dans ses écrits la notion de « continuité culturelle », pour montrer que chaque nation a ses lois morales, ses codes, totalement incorporé dans les comportements et qu'il est impossible de changer brutalement. Elles sont le résultat de l'évolution historique de la nation et ne peuvent donc être changées brutalement. Pour cela, il s'oppose donc à toute rupture brutale de l'histoire, à toute révolution.

Sa philosophie est donc conservatrice et, si elle peut rejoindre les idées libérales sur certains points, elle s'en éloigne aussi fréquemment sur d'autres. Il professe en particulier un mépris vis-à-vis de l'activité économique et un rejet du progrès scientifique.
