Edward [Harrison] Crane III, plus communément appelé Ed Crane est né le 15 août 1944. Il est un libéral américain, d'orientation conservatrice. Anciennement, président des étudiants pour une société libertarienne, il fut par la suite, le co-fondateur et président du Cato Institute de 1977 au 1er octobre 2012. Son meilleur ennemi, Murray Rothbard l'appelait le big boss car il a régné sur les différentes ramifications des organisations libérales et libertariennes aux États-Unis avec le soutien financier des frères Koch (Charles et David). Il était le patron de la "Libertarian Review Foundation", et ses publications Inquiry et Update ; du Fonds national de justice des contribuables ; et son influence dans le parti libertarien fut conséquente car il fut le président national. Il a dirigé les campagnes présidentielles du parti libertarien en 1976 et 1980.
