James Rolph Edwards

James Rolph Edwards est universitaire, Professeur d'économie dans le Montana. D'inspiration libérale, James Edwards fait valoir que l'argument des économistes préconisant l'intervention de l'Etat pour la production des biens publics est un argument fallacieux. Il énonce, dans un article publié en 2004, dans la revue The Freeman, que la recherche de rentes (rent-seeking) explique le process par lequel l'Etat contrôle le marché en adoptant une politique mercantiliste. Tout ce que réalise l'Etat avec succès, c'est de créer des monopoles ou d'empêcher la libre concurrence (subvention, contrôle, réglementation), ce qui empêche une comparaison entre initiative privée et production publique. Il donne un exemple éloquent de "grands travaux" réalisés par le secteur privé qui fut un succès. L'entrepreneur, James J. Hill, a construit le Great Northern Railroad Transcontinental dans les années 1890 sans un centime de l'Etat fédéral et sans subvention d'aucune entité publique.
