Article principal : Assurance maladie.En Irlande, les transpositions des directives européennes ont eu pour effet de libéraliser le système de protection sociale par la création de sociétés d'assurances privées. Certes, celles-ci doivent être agréées par l'Organisme Central de Protection Sociale en Irlande (The Health Insurance Authority).
Il est précisé dans les règles de l'organisme:
- "Rules : Until 1994, the only health insurance companies offering services in Ireland were the VHI and the restricted membership companies. The European Union 3rd Directive on Non-Life Insurance, which came into effect on 1 July 1994, allowed other companies to offer private health insurance and since then BUPA Ireland and Vivas Health have entered the Irish market. At the same time, the Health Insurance Act, 1994 was passed, which regulated the health insurance market. The Health Insurance (Amendment) Act 2001 and the Health Insurance (Amendment) Act 2003 also enhance the role of the Health Insurance Authority and provide for the introduction of lifetime community rating ".
