James Tobin, né le 5 mars 1918 et décédé le 11 mars 2002, est un économiste américain, lauréat Prix Nobel d'économie pour ses travaux sur l'offre de monnaie et à sa "théorie de sélection de portefeuille". Considéré comme un des plus distingués économistes keynésien, il sera pendant pratiquement toute sa vie un des plus farouches opposant aux monétaristes.
